Alarm Management

The In-Reach 7520 (IR-7520)
series of highly secure network element management (NEM) solutions offers a
unique combination of console and alarm management solutions in a single box.
The eight console ports of the IR-7520 provide control of a variety of
network elements (NEs) such as UNIX servers, switches, CSU/DSUs, routers and
multiplexers. In addition, the 24 dry contact closure alarm points of the
IR-7520 collect and distribute discrete alarm signals from devices such as door
alarms, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and aerial lights of cellular
sites.
The combination of console ports and alarm points in the IR-7520
is highly suitable for manufacturing facilities, data centers, outside plant
street cabinets and any unmanned sites that use a combination of serial
communication devices and bi-state alarm devices.
Corporate network
administrators and operations support systems (OSS) managers at a central
network operations center (NOC) are able to gain total control of all
geographically dispersed remote devices and achieve enhanced reliability and
availability of their networks.
Operation
Console
Management Eight console management (serial) ports of the IR-7520
connect to the console or craft ports of NEs. This serial connection allows the
administrators to manage and configure the NEs and perform software upgrades via
the Command Line Interface (CLI) as if attached locally.
The console
ports of the IR-7520 support script-based automated dynamic provisioning of NEs
and enable their scheduled, unmanned and efficient installation.
Through
its 10BaseT Ethernet port, the IR-7520 can be connected to a separate network
through which the administrator can gain out-of-band access to mission-critical
elements in the in-band network.
In case of a blackout or a network
failure, the optional secure modem integrated in the IR-7520 ensures reliable
"back door" access to the NEs.
Alarm Management The relay
interfaces of discrete alarm devices are connected to the alarm points of the
IR-7520. This connection enables corporate network administrators and OSS
managers to monitor and control the alarm devices from a central NOC. The
In-Reach software enables each IR-7520 physical port to represent a pair of scan
and distribution points.
The scan points accept discrete input signals
generated when contact closure devices such as aerial lights and/or door alarms
change state.
The distribution points send output signals to activate
devices such as generators or fire alarms in response to any alarm signal the
scan points receive. Typical output current levels do not exceed 25 mA at +/-
2.5 Volts (min) or +/- 6 Volts (max).
When the IR-7520 is used with the
intelligent self-healing feature, it can be deployed for unmanned, automatic
fault management of mission-critical applications
High Port Density
The IR-7520 series consists of a cost- and space-saving 1U rackmount
standalone that offers 8 console ports and 24 alarm points in a single unit. It
also offers models with DC power, integrated modem, flash card and
NEBS-compliant combinations.
Furthermore, the combination of console and
alarm management functionality can be scaled to larger port densities by using
the In-Reach 6-slot and 15-slot chassis-based models. These chassis-based models
offer individual console management and alarm management modules with the
highest port densities (up to 280 console ports or up to 560 alarm points)
available in the industry.
Virtual Management Ports The
IR-7520's console management software offers nine virtual ports that can be used
to establish multiple Telnet or Secure Shell sessions. This feature allows
multiple management users to perform troubleshooting operations simultaneously.
SNMP Compatible The SNMP-compatible IR-7520 operates
efficiently in heterogeneous network environments and can be managed by any
industry-standard, SNMP-compliant network management system (NMS).
Further, the IR-7520 can be configured to send SNMP traps to the NMS in
response to alarm events and thereby alert the administrator to perform any
time-sensitive remedial operations.
Scaleable
Software Feature-rich In-Reach console and alarm management software
offers extensive scalability by using the same operating system image across all
standalone and chassis form-factor models, resulting in the simplified
management of thousands of alarm and console devices. Furthermore, the In-Reach
software offers an intuitive CLI for configuration, maintenance, and
troubleshooting.
The In-Reach software also includes a variety of
command and data logging features that offer network administrators the ability
to track previously entered commands and events from a system log file. With
this feature, security breaches and last change events are much easier to
isolate.
The In-Reach software, with its robust security and proactive
fault management features, enables the efficient management of widely dispersed
NEs.
Sun Break Solution MRV Communications' consistent
efforts to address virtually every aspect of remote console management have
resulted in a long-awaited solution for serial break signal problems with Sun
servers and workstations. The console management ports of the IR-7520 support
this feature.
The innovative circuit design of the IR-7520 prevents a
break signal from being generated when the IR-7520 is powered off either
intentionally or unexpectedly. Such break signals will halt the normal operation
of the Sun servers and workstations and potentially disrupt network operations.
The IR-7520 offers a combination of hardware, software and firmware
solutions to this problem and guarantees significant cost savings through
reduced personnel visits and undisrupted operation of the Sun devices. These
solutions offers significant benefits if the attached Sun device is a
mission-critical Web server or a database server.
Security To
add to your peace of mind, the IR-7520 offers a variety of built-in security
features such as port-level and multi-level password protection, access control
lists (ACLs), IP filtering, SecurID, RADIUS, dial-back, and PPP (PAP, CHAP). In
addition, support for the industry-standard Secure Shell serves as a highly
secure alternative to non-secure Telnet access and prevents unauthorized
intrusion during out-of-band access. This package of robust security features
comes standard with the In-Reach console management software and is unmatched in
the industry.
Automated Response to Alarm Conditions The
automated response to alarm conditions feature in the In-Reach software
facilitates timely, intelligent and unmanned alarm device management. Using this
feature, network/OSS managers can define specific alarm trigger conditions and
associate them with corresponding remedial actions. Consequently, any defined
trigger condition that occurs at an alarm point automatically activates the
corresponding action. With provision to define as many as 255 trigger conditions
and 255 actions, this self-healing feature enhances the reliability and
availability of mission-critical networks and ensures predictable fault
management.
Out-Of-Band Management Wherever you are, you can
be in reach of your network using the extensive out-of-band management features
of the IR-7520. The IR-7520 allows you to perform installation, configuration,
management and troubleshooting of your NEs. The IR-7520 connected to your
out-of-band network can be accessed through a variety of standard interfaces
such as 10BaseT Ethernet (RJ-45) or PPP-compatible integrated (or external) V.90
modem. These interfaces allow network administrators to gain out-of-band access
to their NEs quickly and reliably via TCP/IP Telnet, Secure Shell and PPP
dial-up. |
